Paṭhama Natumhāka Sutta, “They’re Not Yours! - Pt 1” The Connected Discourses (SN 35.101).

Today’s Sutta Exploration session was devoted to the Paṭhama Natumhāka Sutta (“They’re Not Yours! – Part 1”), where Lord Buddha teaches us that the six senses do not really belong to us, and that we should simply give them up if we want peace and wellbeing. This sutta delves into the core delusion or false belief that is so deeply ingrained in our psyche we don't even consciously know it is there, namely, the identification with our six senses, whereby we believe them to be ours, and therefore there natural vicissitudes lead to much suffering, as we desperately try again and again, in vain, to control and keep them 'unchanging.’

As always, Bhante helped the listener take the sutta into their daily practice with many examples, to bring mindfulness to the dependent origination of consciousness at each of the six sense doors (as the relationship between eye and form, for example, gives rise to eye-consciousness), whereby contact and feeling come to be, giving us the illusion of an independent 'selfhood.' Yet none of them arose independently, and therefore none of them belongs to us. Bhante encouraged us to attend to this sutta very closely, to read it again and again in our own time, and apply these tools in our daily lives, especially when a particular sense door causes us much dukkha, such as our thoughts, that are experts at harassing a mind where wise attention lacks.
