What happened to Finn and Rey?

The heroes of the sequel trilogy, the protagonists, were always meant to be Finn and Rey. Yet at this point, it feels like everyone wants one or even both of them forgotten. Should the sequel trilogy really be the end of two characters that had so much promise? I don't think so.
