Rockhounding can be a bit overwhelming if you go out trying to pick up every cool rock you find.  I used this trip to find some lapidary grade material to work with.  Plainly speaking, lapidary grade material is relatively free of cracks or major defects.  This can mean ready for cutting into slabs or ready for grinding or carving without substantial prep.
I also take the time to differentiate between low grade jasper and silica rich gem grade material.  Learning the difference is relatively easy with enough exposure to various examples.  Whether you're just getting out there or have been a rock hound for years, learning to quickly grade stones in the field should save disappointment during cutting or polishing.
