Guitar Modes Practice - A better way to learn the sound of each mode

In this guitar lesson we’re checking out one of the best ways to practice guitar modes to get a better understanding of the different guitar modes formulas and the different sounds and flavours of each mode.
The best way to hear the sound of each guitar mode is to work from the same root note, rather than cycling through the same scale pattern starting on a different note of the scale (e.g. C Ionian, D Dorian, E Phrygian…)
Here I’m using the D open string as a constant pedal (or drone) as I play through each of the seven guitar modes in order from the note D (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian).
The guitar modes practice routine exercise consists of playing up and down each of the modes by using the same major scale ‘template’ and adjusting the necessary intervals to get the sound of the next mode.
To be more focused in your guitar practice you can set the exercise to a metronome and decide on the picking speed/subdivision. In the example I’m playing 8th notes at 80 BPM.
This approach will work with any major scale pattern that you already know. I’d encourage you to explore different scale patterns.
