People need to know there is a good job waiting for them on the other side of their educations, according to Stephen Moret, president and CEO, Strada Education Network.
“We work to help millions of Americans to secure better jobs and greater economic mobility. We do that through a variety of mechanisms from philanthropy to nonprofits, grant making, research, advocacy, engagement with higher education institutions. It’s a variety of activities,” explains Moret.
WorkingNation sat down with Moret at the ASU+GSV Summit in San Diego.
A current Strada initiative is a $10 million grant challenge to improve student outcomes after completing college. “This is an effort to encourage innovation and scaling of initiatives in higher education institutions that will help many thousands of individuals,” says Moret.
He notes one interesting grant applicant. “In Texas, they're actually focused on how to enable individuals, particularly people of color, that have been in some programs that have tended to have poor outcomes to get additional credentials along with their degree. That will help them get better jobs right out of school.”
“We think that's a really interesting opportunity because obviously there are great lifelong learning advantages from the liberal arts and some of those other programs that don't necessarily have as high of an initial earnings outcome, but trying to help folks get to good jobs to begin with.”
Moret also previews that Strada will be launching an initiative with a focus on community colleges that is greater than the organization’s past focus on those institutions.
