शिवलिंग पर जल चढ़ाते समय ध्यान रखना चाहिए कि आपका मुंह पूर्व दिशा की ओर नहीं होना चाहिए. पूर्व दिशा को भगवान शिव का मुख्य प्रवेश द्वार होता है और इस दिशा की ओर मुंह करने से शिव के द्वार में अवरोध होता है और वो नाराज हो जाते हैं. ध्यान रहे कि जल देते समय आपका मुंह उत्तर दिशा की ओर हो क्योंकि उत्तर दिशा को शिव जी का बायां अंग माना जाता है जो मां पार्वती को समर्पित है. इस दिशा की ओर मुंह करके जल अर्पित करने से भगवान शिव और मां पार्वती दोनों की कृपा प्राप्त होती है. कभी भी भगवान की पीठ की तरफ खड़ें होकर न पूजा करनी चाहिए और न ही जल चढ़ाना चाहिए.
