Young Helen Keller, blind, deaf, and mute since infancy, has become frustrated and violent to the point that she is now a danger to herself and others. Her parents are left with little alternative but to send away to live in an institution. In desperation, they seek help from the Perkins Institute, which sends them a "half-blind Yankee schoolgirl" named Annie Sullivan to serve as Helen's governess and tutor. Through determination, love and sheer stubbornness of will, Annie ultimately breaks through Helen's walls of silence and darkness and teaches her to communicate more effectively through sign language.

Produced by Fred Coe, directed by Paul Aaron, and starring Patty Duke, Diana Muldaur, Charles Siebert and Melissa Gilbert as Helen Keller.
