5 सितंबर 1972 को फिलिस्तीन के आतंकियों ने म्यूनिख के ओलिंपिक गांव पर हमला किया। उनके निशाने पर इजरायल की ओलिंपिक टीम थी। आतंकियों ने इजरायल की ओलिंपिक टीम के 11 सदस्यों की हत्या कर दी। इस घटना के पीछे फिलिस्तीन के 8 आतंकियों का हाथ था। उससे बदला लेने के लिए इजरायल की तत्कालीन प्रधानमंत्री गोल्डा मीर ने एक ऑपरेशन को मंजूरी दी। उस ऑपरेशन का नाम था ऑपरेशन रॉथ ऑफ गॉड। उसे ऑपरेशन बायोनेट के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। यह ऑपरेशन 20 सालों से ज्यादा समय तक चला जिस दौरान मोसाद की टीम ने चुन-चुनकर आतंकियों को मारा। स्टीवन स्पीलबर्ग की 2005 में आई फिल्म म्यूनिख इस ऑपरेशन पर आधारित
The massacre of 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Summer Olympics by the Palestinian terrorist group Black September moved Israel to consider measures to deter future similar actions. Soon after the incident, Prime Minister Golda Meir created Committee X, a small group of government officials tasked with formulating an Israeli response, with herself and Defense Minister Moshe Dayan at the head. She also appointed General Aharon Yariv as her Adviser on Counterterrorism; he, along with Mossad Director Zvi Zamir, took the principal role in directing the ensuing operation. The committee came to the conclusion that to deter future terrorist incidents against Israel they needed to assassinate those who had supported or carried out the Munich massacre, and in dramatic fashion.
