Here's the basic way metronome can be used in jazz guitar practicing (well, it works for any instrument really!) when in 4/4 time signature.
This video will show you a basic technique to "set" the metronome to be perceived as 2&4 in your mind. I know it can be confusing the first few times, so here's the trick.
-Set the metronome at about 60
-Let it click for a while and listen
-Say "ONE" in between to clicks
-Say "TWO" in between the next two clicks.
-Then say "One-two-three-four" ... PLAY!
-The PLAY is the first beat of the tune or exercise.
