How I Live A Simple Lifestyle In A Modern World

The modern world can be stressful.
Along with the advancement in technology, we've also witnessed modern forms of psychological distress including anxiety, alienation, agitation, cognitive overload, and life dissatisfaction.

But how is living a simple life in a modern world possible? Here are 5 little things I do to make it happen

1. Making time for self care

When we are depressed and stressed, we don’t have the motivation to do the things that would help us the most. However, we can all agree that it is during stressful times that self care is even more essential for our well being.

For me, this includes meditation, exercise, setting boundaries, and integrating calming activities throughout the day. Taking small, yet positive steps each day can help to lift the dark cloud hovering over us and find hope again.

While it may be true that self care won’t magically transform our situation into something we prefer, it builds inner strength to make our circumstances less difficult to bear.

2. Consuming information mindfully

We live in the age of the attention economy. There are so many things competing for our focus, and our attention has become someone else's paycheck.

I notice myself getting distracted and overwhelmed when I'm not selective with the information I consume or when I spend too much time online

I'm not at a point where I want to eliminate technology from my life, especially since my job is online. But I practice intentionality with my content consumption, which helps my well being. I quit watching sensationalized news, social media rabbit holes, and stopped keeping a smartphone in bed.

3. Creating white space

Maybe it’s true that being busy makes us feel responsible but it can also quickly wear us down, put a strain on our relationships and rob us of our joy. With all of these things diminished, what’s the point of our busyness each day?

I’m in my mid-40s and I may or may not have many years ahead of me. So instead of shoving unnecessary tasks to my day to day, I have been working on creating white space in my life.

In my quest to simplify, I’ve realized that while it may have been satisfying to do so much in the past, it’s only superficial and a waste of precious time

Outside of work, I may be doing less now but I've been prioritizing what deserves to have been in my list all along - my health, my relationships, my peace of mind.

4. Quitting the hustle trap

My previous job took more from me than what I was willing to give. And because I was working so hard, I rewarded myself with the only way I knew - retail therapy, which further exacerbated the problem. Not only was I giving up my time but I was also wasting money that kept me dependent on that job, which made me more miserable.

It took many years for me to leave the trap I created for myself. But the changes I implemented included simplifying my lifestyle, building my finances, and shifting to a career that I enjoyed more. This allows me to live now, prepare for the future, and gradually become less dependent on my job instead of feeling stuck in it for a long time.

Life is now and not in some imagined, distant future.  We can wait around for retirement to finally begin living the life we want. Or we can start taking the steps to live now.

The choice is ours.

5. Creating a habit of gratitude

Whether on social media or just from our conversation with others, it's easy to lose sight of what’s real as we don’t see their struggles, shortcomings and behind the scenes.

Yes, there are many things we don't have. But there are also many things we do. Perceived scarcity shrinks every good thing in our lives to insignificance but gratitude amplifies them and turns them into abundance.

It was only when I stopped chasing and instead practiced gratitude with what I have that I found the happiness I was searching for.

I'm at a point in my life where it's no longer about competition, winning or losing. Rather, it's to live gently and tread calmly in this journey.

To filter out the noise and the excess, so I can live lightly during the remaining years of my life on earth.
