When electric vehicles came on
When electric vehicles came on the scene, a lot of people were excited that a better alternative to fossil fuel-powered cars was available. An alternative that was better not just for the automobile industry but for the environment.
But today, there is an ongoing debate that electric cars are also bad for the environment. Ever since electric cars were introduced, they seemed to be a great solution to combat climate change since they had boasted zero emissions. But are they?
It was recorded in time past that of the carbon dioxide (Co2) emissions that were released into the atmosphere, a good number came from vehicles. And with car emissions being a great enemy to our climate, electric cars seemed like the best solution.
However, the essential difference between fossil-fueled cars and electric cars has to do with the process of converting potential energy into kinetic energy. In combustion engine cars, the energy is stored in chemical form but it is released through a chemical reaction inside the engine.
For electric vehicles, although they have chemically stored energy, they release the energy electrochemically. This means that they emit no combustion because of their lithium-ion batteries. This is also because there is no fuel being burned, and so there is no air pollution through carbon dioxide.
Electric vehicles have also been praised for being more efficient than fossil-fueled cars, and that's true. But it still leaves the question, are electric cars bad for the environment?
