Fall is the time for autumn decorating, sipping hot chocolate, sitting around the fire, and of course, taking a stroll down the street to see all the orange, red, and yellow leaves. If you’re a fan of the crisp days of autumn, and looking to pick out a new tree for the front or backyard, you have to take the tree's fall leaf color into account and there are few more noteworthy than maple trees.

Maples are best known for their vibrant fall color display but not all are created equal in this particular category. So to help in your search for the perfect fall-colored maple tree, our head horticulturist and I compiled a list of our favorite red-turning varieties.

5. Summer Red Maple
Summer red is a true red maple tree variety and makes the list not only because of its vibrant fall color but also its equally lovely spring and summer foliage. Each spring, the leaves of this tree emerge burgundy red before settling into their lush green-purple over the summer. As the days get cooler, the leaves give one final show when they turn bright red. Use as a street tree out front or a shade tree in the backyard. Summer Red Maple - Growing zones 3-9, spring, summer, and fall color, and a fast-growing addition to the yard.

4. Brandywine Maple
While Summer Red may take the cake each spring, Brandywine Maples's strength lies in the staying power of its brilliant scarlet fall-colored leaves. You’ll often get to enjoy the splash of red in your garden for several weeks! Brandywine is a favorite of homeowners due to the lack of seeds it produces - because little helicopters whirling past aren’t everyone's cup of tea. Plant in a spot you’d like quick coverage as Brandywine is a fast grower and has a pleasing, symmetrical, shape. Brandywine Maple - Growing zones 4-8, adaptable to most soil types, stunning fall color, and is notably seedless.

3. Sugar Maple
Sugar Maple is for those who love all the fall colors. Its lush green leaves offer plenty of shade on the hot summer days before turning an array of reds, oranges, and yellows during the fall. Sugar maples show vibrant oranges on the outside top of their canopy while the interior leaves turn yellow. All of this makes for a magical fall effect perfect to take the family pictures in front of each year. Sugar Maple - Growing zones 3-8, multiple fall colors, and great wildlife habitat.

2. October Glory Maple
October Glory Maple is aptly named as it’s known to display bright red leaves around October each year and often keeps the color for a month or more! Many use this variety in warmer climates of the south or west because it reliably colors in a wide range of climate conditions. Plus, with a growth rate of two feet or more per year, you won’t have to wait long for the tree to make a big impact in your landscape. #2 October Glory Maple - Growing zones 4-9, colors in warmer climates than other maples, and grows exceptionally fast.

1. Autumn Blaze Maple
Autumn Blaze HAS to top this list because it’s pretty much set the bar for maple tree color that all other varieties are compared to. It’s a hybrid between the red maple, which gives it that stunning fall color, and the silver maple which is responsible for its fast-growing nature. Disease resistant and loved by many, odds are good that the red trees you think of when you think of maple trees are Autumn Blazes or another hybrid like Armstrong or Celebration. Autumn Blaze Maple - Growing zones 3-8, award-winning improved variety of maple, and adaptable to many soil types
