This is complimentary to the “Special Project – Challenging A-Tap’s Limit” video (【特別企画】Aタップ限界に挑戦).
In this video, we will demonstrate the procedures for removing a broken tap:
1) Determine the drill diameter to be used according to the shape and size of the tap used (in this video, we used a dia. 5 mm drill for the M10 x 1.5 hand tap).
2) If the head of the tap is protruding, flatten it with tools such as a grinder and measure the length of the broken tap.
3) Perform centering. Dry cutting with a larger diameter tool (dia. 7 mm in this video). Proceed carefully and slowly.
4) Make a hole to crush the core (center part) of the tap. Be extra slow and careful when contact is made. The keys are to select a good quality cutting fluid and stopping from time to time to carefully remove the chips.
5) Stop before the tap completely breaks and make a note of the position of the Z axis.
6) After clearing the chips, apply cutting fluid and let the drill penetrate more slowly.
7) Carefully remove the broken pieces of the tap with a plier or a tweezer, and clean it with air blow.
The drill used in this video - "EX-H-DRL" (also known as Hard Drill) - is ideal for removing broken high-speed steel cutting taps such as spiral taps and point taps. However, in the case of broken carbide taps and roll form taps, please remove them by electric discharge machining. Carbide taps are very hard and the EX-H-DRL may not be able to break them. With roll form taps, the core cannot be completely broken because there are no wide flutes like cutting taps. For technical assistance, please contact OSG’s technical support center.
