What Does The Patch Command Do?

The PATCH command is a good way to create a trimmed surface from a point cloud or mesh. It can be useful for modeling a site's contour lines as well as to help produce accurate site drawings, sections and renderings.

Using the Patch command involves a bit of planning to ensure you get a good result. You'll need to prepare your contour lines for use in Rhino by first extracting the points that define them, and then identifying the highest and lowest elevations.

This is the most important step in producing a high quality, realistic patch. Once you've done this, the rest of the process will be straightforward and fast.

One of the best ways to do this is with a CAD program that can handle contour lines. Most CAD programs have the ability to export contour lines in a format that is compatible with Rhino.

You'll also need a suitable starting surface for your new patch. This can be an existing surface, or it can be a new one created by using the PlanarSrf command.

To get the most out of your patch you'll want to make sure it's constructed with the right materials. This is especially true if you're putting the patch onto a mesh, as you will want to select the material that's the most appropriate for your situation and make sure it's oriented correctly.

The Patch command's most important controls are found in the right-hand panel and include: pSrf, point_spacing, U span, V span, and Stiffness. The Stiffness setting determines how much the plane based on the input curves is allowed to deform. The bigger this number, the "stiffer" the resulting surface will be.
