Australian marine safety authorities have rescued 20 Indonesian fishermen from a sinking boat off the West Australian coast after receiving a distress signal on Thursday.
A Perth Challenger Jet and an ADF aircraft found the boat 1,200 kilometres out at sea and dropped life rafts and other essential items to the stranded sailors.
A Japanese fishing vessel offered assistance on Saturday before HMAS Anzac arrived with medical support and an interpreter a few hours later.
All crew members tested negative for COVID-19 and will return to their home port in Bali except for one of the men who was flown to a Perth hospital for hand surgery.
Defence Minister Peter Dutton praised all involved in the rescue mission, saying “their efforts in bad weather and high sea state should make all Australians proud".
