What started as a traditional hog operation in 1987 grew into a reliable processor of lambs, goats, hogs and beef cattle.

Brower Farms in Brown City contributes much of its success and growth to the area’s ethnic communities, customers who could come to the farm and choose what animals to process.

“As we grew, we kept expanding the buildings,” said Dave Brower, owner of Brower Farms, which operates a USDA- and state-inspected processing facility. The farm also sells retail meat and custom processes.

“We built a new processing area, a new retail area. We’ve really been blessed to have the family that we have here.”

A Lapeer County Farm Bureau member, Brower said his employees of six, eight, and 10 years also helped grow the farm to where it is today.

“When people come out, they pick out a cow or a goat or a lamb that they want and we process it for them, and they take it home immediately,” he said. “A lot of people nowadays want to know where their meat comes from. They can come out and see the animal. They can meet the family. See how it’s cared for.”
