Jebel Toubkal is the highest peak in Morocco and the highest peak in all of Northern Africa, at 4,167m. We climbed Toubkal independently from the small town of Imlil to the summit over two days in the High Atlas Mountains in challenging conditions.

On our first day hiking Jebel Toubkal, we had pretty good weather with just a few showers. The path was very straightforward to follow and we made it to the Jebel Toubkal Refuge in the late afternoon without issue. Walking through the valleys, passing waterfalls, taking in the stunning views, we shared the path with a few other hikers and mules carrying packs of supplies to the Jebel Toubkal Refuge where we would spend the night.

The weather in the High Atlas Mountains, and in particular on Jebel Toubkal itself, is very changeable and during the night the windows of the refuge were rattling violently due to the heavy wind and rain outside.

We had an early start the next morning and the weather hadn't eased off but we pushed on regardless. As we began our ascent, groups with guides were turning back but we decided to keep going. We had come this far and we were determined to reach the summit.

The conditions while hiking Jebel Toubkal were extreme. We had snow, hail, rain and very, very high winds. The only groups we heard of reaching the top at that point that day were two military groups from the UK, training in the High Atlas mountains.

Eventually, after braving the elements, we reached the summit of Jebel Toubkal and the highest point in North Africa. There were no views because of the brutal conditions but we were ecstatic to have made it! On the way down the rain stopped, the weather cleared and we had blue skies all the way back to Imlil looking back at the now clear summit of Jebel Toubkal.

It was a tough but incredibly rewarding climb and such a great personal achievement to hike North Africa's highest peak together and make it all the way to the summit despite the tough conditions. An amazing couple of days that will remain in our memories for a long time to come.

ⓘ MORE INFORMATION ⓘ
We hiked independently but if you want to take a guide you can organise one in Imlil. We stayed one night before and one night afterwards at Dar Atlas Guesthouse (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Revi...) and couldn't recommend it more. Jamal is a local guide so he can answer any questions you have. He's also a great guy and he and his family took great care of us- really genuine, nice welcoming people
