Tans are caused by harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun or tanning beds and can increase the risk of skin cancer. If sunscreen is not applied correctly, then a tan may develop which is a sign of sun damage.
It is important to wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. It should be applied at least every 2 hours or more often if swimming or sweating. Sunscreen should be applied 15-30 minutes before going out into the sun. Additionally, you should wear lip balm with an SPF of 30 or higher to protect the lips.
Sunless tanning lotions do not cause cancer. The tan will usually last for about 3-5 days after applying the lotion. It is important that you also use sunscreen too since sunless tanners alone only provide minimal sun protection.
Ask your pharmacist and dermatologist any questions you may have about sunscreen.
