I've run in Nike Shield
I've run in Nike Shield shoes for several years now (Pegasus Shield 33, 34, and 35), so when I heard that Nike was coming out with a Shield version of the Turbo, I was perplexed. And then I saw it. and it was weird. But weird is good. And this shoe is good.
Disclosures: this is a pair of shoes that I purchased with my own money. No one sent me the shoe, paid for me to wear the shoe, or paid for me to make this video. No one will see my footage until it goes up on YouTube.
The Turbo Shield has no laces, which I don't really have a problem with. But it also has a dual booty construction. An outer layer to keep moisture out, and an inner layer that is more neoprene-like material and also mesh. There's an elastic foot cage to keep the foot snug, and that cage can be adjusted by velcro strap.
There are three pull tabs on the shoe to help you get this high top running shoe on. And as for the midsole and outsole, it's the same Zoom X and React foam combo we've seen in the Turbo 1, Gyakusou Turbo, and the Turbo 2.
In terms of running experience, it feels a bit roomier in the toe box than a standard Turbo, so in that sense it reminds me a bit of the Gyakusou Turbo and it's a bit more chill attitude. The high top did a great job of keeping moisture out, and the materials kept my feet dry even through some very wet conditions.
My only concern is the tread pattern of the outsole. It's similar to the other Turbos, except for the addition of what Nike calls extra grip. I'm not sure if it's a spray on layer or something embedded in the rubber or what. But I'm a bit skeptical for my intended use on ice and snow. The language that Nike is using is similar to that used in the Pegasus 33 and 34 Shields, and those were some of my favorite winter running shoes. Time will tell.
