Hilma af Klint Paintings for the Future at the GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM

Hilma af Klint “Paintings for the Future” is the af Klint show New York painters have been dreaming of since 1987. This is the first major American exhibition which contains prime examples of all the major series and periods of this phenomenal artist’s oeuvre.

Hilma Af Klint (1862-1944) is a mythic painter.  Born In Stockholm Sweden into a family of minor nobility and Swedish Naval officers, af Klint was one of the first generation of women artists allowed to study at the Swedish Royal Academy of Art.  While there, she, along with a group of like minded female artists, influenced by the likes of Madam Blavatsky, Theosophy, Rudolf Steiner,  Christianity, Buddhism and Charles Darwin, began attending séances and performing spiritual ceremonies.  By 1905 this group was producing some of the first abstract art known in Western art history.  Around 1906 af Klint receives her lifetime commission from one of her spiritual guides to create “The Great Work” an extensive cycle of paintings illustrating the spiritual world and man’s journey along the path to spiritual evolution titled “The Paintings for the Temple”.  Because of humanities undeveloped spiritual state, It was af Klint’s wish that this body of work not be exhibited to the public until twenty years after her death.
