#LX708 #Roland #DigitalPiano

Hi everyone, and thanks for being here for another piano review video at the Merriam Pianos YouTube channel. Today we’ll be looking at the Roland LX708, which is their top, flagship digital piano upright model.

This is our first time in front of one of these and we’re thrilled to be able to do a deep dive for you here.

Piano Sound

One of their clear hallmarks throughout Roland’s LX series is the obvious focus on tone, from the sound engine, speaker system and cabinet design. The sound engine itself is Roland’s new PureAcoustic fully modeled sound engine with limitless polyphony on the piano tones. The character of the tone is similar to the previous generation V-Piano tone fully modeled engine, albeit more refined with more nuance. The two main acoustic piano tones are ‘American Grand’ which is undoubtedly based on a New York Steinway, and ‘European Grand’ which is likely based on either a Hamburg Steinway, C. Bechstein or Bosendorfer.

Roland has placed a huge emphasis on the placement of the speaker system to replicate the tone of an acoustic upright piano, which itself is a powerful 8 speaker array driven by 4 stereo amplifiers. The player can then further customize the tone via Roland’s Piano Designer function which allows for a huge amount of customization.

The range of colour and sound these main piano tones are capable of is truly remarkable, especially on the European grand. There’s 324 total on-board sounds, and all the tones other than the main acoustic piano tones have a solid 256 notes of polyphony, and are of studio quality. Even though you can find many of these other patches throughout other instruments in Roland’s lineup, the delivery via the signal processing and 8 speaker array of the LX708 bring these patches to a whole new level.

Piano Action

The LX708 features Roland’s newest action, their Hybrid Grand Keyboard. The big upgrade over the PHA50 is that the keystick has been lengthened and the geometry improved, making this action feel closer to an acoustic grand piano. There’s a nice texture on the white and black keys, wooden core keysticks, escapement, a triple sensor along with Roland’s new Haptic Key vibration.

I’m a huge fan of Roland actions in general, and in my opinion this is definitely their best action yet. It’s super fluid, responsive and just an overall pleasure to play.

Features/Connectivity

The other on-board features here are typical of what you’ll find in other digital pianos at this price point, such as a metronome, dual and split among many others.

Connectivity includes DC in, stereo miniature input jack, L/MONO, R output jacks, USB type A and B, two headphone jacks, along with both Bluetooth MIDI and Bluetooth Audio. The Bluetooth Audio allows you to use the LX708 has a high-end wireless stereo. Unless you already have an audiophile rig, given the 8 speaker system and signal processing, the LX708 will probably sound better than most stereo setups.

Conclusions:

The LX708 is another great addition to the Roland lineup. If you’re looking at a high end digital piano, this is surely one you’ll want to check out. Stay tuned as we’ll soon be coming out with a LX708 vs Kawai NV5 comparison video to see how these two class leaders stack up against one another.

Thanks for watching!
