This is an activity that separates a mixture of wheat flour, mustard seeds and Bengal grams in order to explain the idea of sieving and handpicking. Sieving separates wheat flour since the pores are small and pass only flour while blocking mustard seeds and Bengal grams. Bengal gram is the large enough that it can be picked by hand and separated from mustard seeds. Thus, the physical differences in grain size can be the basis of separating components of a mixture. A fishing net acts as a sieve as it allows water to escape while capturing fishes.
