In this video, Jonny Olsen will teach you the basics of Lai Sootsanaen สุดสะแนน on the khaen.
This khaen is tuned to Am. It is the most common khaen you hear in Ponglang music of Northeast Thailand and most easiest to find when you are looking to buy a khaen at a night market. If you go straight to the maker you can get a custom made khaen and I recommend this to more advanced players since the common khaen you buy is of low quality.
This video goes into the basics of Lai Sootsanaen- showing the player the 5 dominant notes and chords used. You can make different combinations of chords and notes. There are many different variations in khaen playing making it highly improvisational. The Lai Khaen (Sootsanaen, Po Sai, Soi, Noi, Yai) are not supposed to be played the same everytime like a song but should be played from the heart and soul. Use your imagination, be creative, be improvisational! This is the beauty of the khaen.
