Young's modulus (or modulus elasticity) is an important characteristic of rock which is used in design as it provides estimates of rock deformations under loads. To estimate this modulus, it is necessary to conduct an unconfined compression test (see how it works in the lab    • Unconfined Compression Test on Rock |...  ), and plot the obtained data as the load (in MPa) against deformation (strain). The linear part of the curve, starting from the origin, is then estimated and used to define the modulus. This video gives an example how to analyse the unconfined compression test data and calculate the Young's (elasticity) modulus.
