He is one of the most prominent names in contemporary and post-modern Urdu poetry. He worked as the editor of literary supplement of the prestigious Urdu daily, Qaumi Awaz. Apart from contributing commentaries on current affairs for All India Radio and BBC Urdu, he has also been associated with two reputed research journals in English and Urdu published by the Zakir Hussain Institute of Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. He is currently associated with Rekhta Foundation.
