Sometimes the hottest ride in town doesn't come with a steering wheel. Behind the scenes at the largest camel market in the Middle East.

Birqash is just 35 km northwest of Cairo.  Each day hundreds of camels change hands – some to become pack animals and others meant for the slaughterhouse. It’s a rough and tumble place, filled with stony-faced male traders (who are in fact quite friendly).  Don’t forget to grab a bite to eat at the local stalls that line the edges of the market, or several cups of super-sweet tea and perhaps a shisha pipe.

Check out:
• How to get a camel into (and out of) a pickup truck
• What to look for when buying a camel
• Camel milk.  Yes, it’s for sale at the market.  Give it a try! Don’t you want to know what camel milk tastes like?
