In this video, Jeremy Cioara covers how to back up data using Amazon Glacier. This is a cloud storage setup that’s similar to Dropbox (which is built on Amazon S3) but at a fraction of the price. Although price is an advantage, there’s a disadvantage when it comes to speed for backup restoration.

Amazon Glacier was created as a cost-effective alternative to Dropbox. Depending on the subscription you’re using, Dropbox will run you ten to twelve cents per gigabyte, while the same storage on Glacier will cost about one cent per gigabyte. This is a fantastic difference, but there is a tradeoff. Glacier isn’t as accessible, so if you want to do a restore off of your backup storage, you’re going to experience a three- to four-hour delay before it’s even ready. Depending on how you plan on using it, though, Amazon’s storage service could be a great option. Jeremy will walk you through each step of setting up the service, starting with creating an AWS account.
