One of the best places in the Pacific North West (PNW) is the Anacortes area & Whidby Island.   Here you will find beautiful wilderness and amazing views looking out to the San Juan islands and even British Columbia Canada!   There is so much to do in the area and it is great for kids, photography, and they are also known for the food.  It was definitely a great experience for all of us with memories that will last a lifetime... especially now that I made this video to look back on :)

Where to camp in Washington State with Kids?
Deception Pass - Bowman Bay Campsite Review:

I recommend Bowman Bay campgrounds as it is secluded and not as crowded as the main Deception Pass Park.   There are only about 19 campsites in the Bowman Bay which is part of the Deception Pass Park, but across the bridge on its own.   Even when all camp sites are taken, it still feels empty like you have this outdoor paradise to yourself.  The bathrooms were very clean with a shower each for the women and mens area.

In this video, we had reservations for Campsite #278.   In early June, things were already booked, so when we seen 3 days available we booked it immediately and left the next day!   It has no view, but it is really tucked away and private which we liked!  Some of the campsites have no privacy at all to everyone walking or driving past.

The absolute best campsite is #280 because of the amazing view.   (You'll see in in the video) To get this spot, you need to book exactly 9 months earlier at the stroke of midnight!  Believe me on this.  We have it booked for this summer 2019, but it took me 3 tries to get it!   1 second past midnight and the other person will get it before you and you will need to wait until their stay is over which could be 3 days to even a week before you can try again!

Kids Activities:

Our kids enjoyed exploring the Bowman Bay park, Kids Playground, Beach and Pier.   There is also a short family friendly walkable trail over the hill to the Rosario beach.   Rosario beach was beautiful with nice picnic areas with breathtaking views.   There are also tide pools to explore with lots of crabs, hermit crabs, small fish and anemones.

Also roast marshmallows & making s'mores at the fire pits by the beach at sunset.   It was breathtaking and one of the highlights of our trip.

Brain Food for Kids
We took Amalin out of school for this camping trip.  So we always make sure to include fun learning activities.   We bought a bow drill to make a fire on our own, but the campsite and wood was too damp (So our goal it to start our own fire with sticks during our next camp trip.)  While in La Conner for lunch we bought a paint set from one of their many curiosity stores and the kiddos had a great time painting the different types of wildlife and plants.

Wildlife:
There were deer, rabbits, and birds in the area.  People were looking out from the pier to see the Orcas Killer Whales, but we didn't see any.

Beware:
One of the nights, an animal was trying to get into our food storage.   It was loud and persistent.  We ended up scaring it away with our van's Auto start option!   We are not sure what it was, but it was scary to hear that in the middle of the night.  We think it could have been a raccoon as we did not hear any growls... Yikes!

Bowman Bay Weather in June
In early June, Bowman Bay was about 10 degrees colder than Kirkland or the Seattle area.  During our stay the temperature was 70 high and 49 low.   In the middle of the night and mornings, it was very cold and even though we brought 8 blankets, we still needed to hug each other to stay warm.   However, all that snuggling was also one of the best memories there.

Bowman Bay Camping Itinerary:

Day 1:  We stopped by Deception Pass bridge which is 3 minutes from the Bowman Bay campsite of the Deception Pass Park.

Set up the campsite & explored the Bowman Bay Beach and Park.  Yummy halibut and mushroom dinner over our campfire.

Day 2:  Visited La Conner for Lunch and bought more firewood.   Found a cute painting picnic basket activity and painted at our campsite.   Roasted marshmallows at a beachside fire pit and watched the sun go down.   Yummy steak kabob dinner over our camp fire.

Day 3:  Visited Anacortes Shrimp Shack for lunch.   Had a picnic at Rosario beach then explored the tide pools.   Visited Deception Pass beach.  Pack up our things and that was the end of our camping trip with the kids!
