Ligand-Gated Ion Channels - Cell Signaling
AP Biology - Signal Transduction.

Ligand-gated ion channels are membrane receptors.
When the signal binds to the receptor, it changes its shape, which causes the gate to either open or close. When the gate is open, the channel allows the diffusion of ions.
Ligand-gated channels are very important in neurons. The neurotransmitters are the ligands that bind to receptors on the post-synaptic cell. The binding of the neurotransmitters opens the gates allowing specific ions to diffuse.
