This week on American Black Journal: Preview the 18th annual ARISE! Detroit Neighborhoods Day on Aug. 3. The annual citywide day of service includes more than 100 events like beautification projects, music and art festivals, school supply giveaways, and more.

Host Stephen Henderson talks with ARISE Detroit! Executive Director Luther Keith about this year’s Neighborhoods Day and the new “My Neighborhood Matters” campaign.  

Plus, the 41st annual African World Festival returns July 12-14 at Detroit’s Hart Plaza. Henderson talks with Yolanda Jack, Manager of Community Engagement at The Wright Museum, which organizes the festival.  

They talk about the festival’s growth over the years and how it celebrates the arts and culture of the African diaspora.  

The episode closes with a performance from jazz artist Sky Covington singing “All of Me,” accompanied by musicians John Douglas and Club Crescendo.
