Part One of the construction of a Mini-ITX desktop PC using a 4th generation "Haswell" Core i3 processor. Included is an overview of all components, as well as the installation of the CPU, Noctua cooler and RAM. The second part of the build can be found here: Haswell i3 Mini-ITX Build (Part Two)

The components used in this build (and alternatives) are as follows:

Case: Thermaltake Element Q.

CPU: Intel Core i3 4330T (3.0GHz, dual core, 35W TDP, HD4600 graphics. This is a tray processor with no cooler included).

Cooler: Noctua NH-L9i.

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z87N-WIFI.

Memory: Kingston HyperX Genesis DDR3 1600MHz CL9 2 x 2GB.

Boot drive: Samsung 840 Series Pro 128GB.

Sound card (if required): Creative Blaster Audigy Fx 5.1 PCIe.

Optical drive: any SATA DVD or BluRay drive! :)

Many other Mini-ITX cases could be used -- eg the CiT Mini ITX Case with 300W PSU -- though note that most very small Mini-ITX cases will not support an socket 1150 (Haswell i3, i5 or i7) CPU.

A cheaper but close alternative CPU would be the i3 4130T (2.9GHz, 35W TDP with Intel 4400 graphics), which comes as a boxed processor with a low-profile cooler included.

A cheaper but very close alternative motherboard would be the Gigabyte H87N-WIFI. Any SSD or 2.5 inch hard drive could be used for the boot drive.

Any DDR3 1600MHz DIMMS could be used for memory. The sound card is only needed if you plan to run an application -- like Dragon NaturallySpeaking -- that has known problems with internal audio.
