I am a neurodivergent costumer.
I am a neurodivergent costumer. Lately I received my official ADHD and Autistic diagnosis. I’ve been thinking about how these things impact my experiences of the historical costuming community. Appearances can be misleading, especially when people do not see the social, economical, and emotional impact of living our lives because we have been taught to hide it. I made this video as a tribute to who I actually am, right before I got my diagnosis, and because I truly think that all of us neurodivergent costumers can find our own community with each other. Neurodivergent is an umbrella term for several neurological differences that impact our ability to function at neurotypical expectations. Some of these include ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, and Tourettes, and there are more. The neurodiversity movement was made to challenge the idea that we are somehow broken, and to explain that we are a natural part of human diversity. I want the world to see that we are beautifully made, that we are makers too. That we exist. And even though it may be nearly impossible to ever feel entirely safe or well in this world, we deserve to know we belong here. We aren't a mistake.
