Welcome to Merriam Pianos on YouTube! Today we’re coming at you from sunny California and the NAMM 2023 convention. We got to spend a lot of time at the Kawai booth and had our very first look at the new Kawai CA401.

The CA401 will be replacing the CA49, which was Kawai’s entry point into a console digital piano with a wooden action.

Overview
There was something interesting about the CA49 that we think remains the case here with the CA401; as opposed to feeling like a downgraded version of its older sibling, the new CA501, the CA401 feels more like a suped-up CN201.

In that sense, we almost feel like the CA401 would fit under the CN banner as opposed to the CA banner. This isn’t a criticism by any means, just our feeling based on the specs and overall musical impressions.

Spec Rundown
The CA401 essentially has the same musical brain as the CN201. It does have two extra speakers so the treble presentation is better, but the power behind the speakers is the same as on the 201 with 40 watts of total power.

Now, there are a number of notable improvements over the CA49. The 401 now features the new SKEX Competition Grand sample, which serves as the default, core acoustic piano sound.

This is a meticulously recorded sample, and while the 401 does not feature the Rendering engine component that you’ll find on the 701 and 901, this is still a very thick, noticeably superior sample than the SKEX sample on the CA49, and arguably the top piano sound for the available for the price.

They’ve also adjusted the positioning of the Grand Feel Pedal System, so it feels more comfortable now for your right foot.

From there Kawai has also upgraded the cabinet design and gone with a higher quality veneer for the finish, though it doesn’t look radically different from the CA49.

In terms of the action, it’s still the Grand Feel Compact, but they have added counterweights which do make the action feel a little bit nicer.

Finally, they’ve added Bluetooth Audio, whereas the CA49 only had Bluetooth MIDI.

Final Thoughts
The overall impact of the upgrades here is much more subtle than the CA501 which represents a true evolution from the CA59. This feels more like an enhancement as opposed to a full-blown evolution.

By and large, our first impressions are positive, even if the upgrades aren’t totally Earth-shattering.

Thanks for watching and stay tuned for a full review of the CA401 once we have one in our showroom!
