Most have heard of the shootout at the OK Corral, but there's another event in Arizona's past that many might not have heard of - the Bisbee Massacre - where 4 victims lost their lives and 6 men saw justice served in the Old West.

On the night of December 8, 1883, an event that would come to be known as the Bisbee Massacre unfolded. Five armed bandits made their way into the town of Bisbee, Arizona to perform what they thought would be a great heist - the robbery of A. A. Castaneda's General Merchandise Emporium where the store doubled as a bank, holding the mining payroll for employees of the Copper Queen Mine.

What resulted was a score of only about $800, a stolen pocket watch and some other goods, and the death of 4 citizens of Bisbee.

A manhunt for the responsible parties ensued, partially led by a man by the name of John Heath. But something didn't add up. The town quickly identified the perpetrators of the crime and rounded them up... along with John Heath who was accused of organizing and planning the robbery.

The men were jailed and brought before the Cochise County courthouse in Tombstone, Arizona. The bandits were found guilty of murder in the first degree and sentenced to death by hanging. John Heath was found guilty of his participation in the robbery and instead sentenced to life at Yuma Territorial Prison. The citizens of Tombstone and Bisbee did not agree with this decision.

On the morning of February 22, 1884, the Copper Queen Mine did not open. Instead, a group of miners and citizens made their way down Toughnut Street to the courthouse's jail where they pushed their way past guards and took Heath into their own custody. They were planning to serve their own justice. And there it was served from a telegraph pole not far from the courthouse where John Heath was hung.

The other men met their own fate from a five-man gallows built especially for the occasion on the courthouse grounds. All five men were hung on March 28 and eventually buried in Tombstone's Boothill Cemetery.
