During the Cold War, Albania was just about as socialist a country as you could get, and Tirana was the small town chosen to be its grand, modern capital city. But instead of filling it with sprawling, lawn-filled housing projects like Moscow or Bucharest, Tirana packed its communist-style buildings as close together as possible. When Communism ended in the early '90s, this consistency of buildings ended up being the perfect urban fabric for commercial and cultural development.
