A primer on adaptive music
A primer on adaptive music (a.k.a. dynamic music) in video games, talking about it's purpose and a few techniques of implementation.
Adaptive music is music where game events cause changes in the music (for example melody, rhythm, volume, etc.). In this way, the music can appropriately score the action that is happening on screen, and also be varied enough so that players can stay interested and immersed in their gaming experience. There are many, many different ways to make music dynamic, but two common ideas are vertical remixing, where musical layers are added and removed (vertically), and horizontal re-sequencing, where pre-recorded musical chunks are shuffled and re-ordered based on the narrative on screen.
