April 22nd, 1994. 31 year old Evander "Real Deal" Holyfield took on undefeated hard hitting 26 year old Michael Moorer aka “Double M” in the 1st defenses of his IBF & WBA Heavyweight Tiles in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This was Holyfield's first fight with Don Turner as his trainer and cutman, as he had dismissed longtime cutman Ace Marotta rather than paying his fee of USD25,000 to be in his corner.

Prefight records; Holyfield 30(22)-1, Moorer 34(30)-0.

In November 1993, Holyfield recaptured the IBF & WBA Heavyweight Titles with a razor close MD12 over Riddick Bowe to avenge his 1st ever career setback handed to him a year ago when he was relieved of his IBF, WBA & WBC Heavyweight Titles via UD12 in an epic showdown named Fight of the Year 1993 by Ring Magazine.

For the 1st defenses of both titles, he was set to face the unbeaten Pennsylvanian southpaw.

Entering the fight, Holyfield who was former Undisputed Cruiserweight & Undisputed Heavyweight Champion had defeated top oppositions such as Carlos De Leon, Tyrone Booze, Chisanda Mutti, Henry Tillman, Ricky Parkey, Ossie Ocasio, James Tillis, Pinklon Thomas, James Douglas, Bert Cooper, Michael Dokes, Larry Holmes, Riddick Bowe, George Foreman, Dwight Muhammad Qawi (2x) & Alex Stewart (2x).

On the other hand, Moorer who was the inaugural WBO Light Heavyweight & former WBO Heavyweight Champion had notable wins over Leslie Stewart, Alex Stewart, James Smith, Bert Cooper & Frankie Swindell (2x).

It was a highly competitive affair between an orthodox and a southpaw where both had their moments with lots of back and forth action with a number of close rounds that arguably could have gone either way.

Note: This was the 1st time in 8 years since Holyfield had fought a southpaw. The last time was against journeyman Jesse Shelby back in April 1986 whom he defeated via KO3 in the Cruiserweight division.

In round 2, Moorer was evidently in control for the most part until he was floored with a right hook-left hook combination with about 20 seconds to the bell. It was the only knockdown of the fight.

In round 5, Holyfield showed signs of fatigue and he was cut on the left eye from a right jab followed by a left uppercut.

Between rounds 6 and 12, Holyfield’s left jab occasionally fade from exhaustion and troubles with his left shoulder but he displayed his famed and dogged determination by constantly returning fire after taking the best shots from Moorer, who put up a spirited effort in his 12th world title fight and went the full 12 rounds for the first time in 35 bouts.

After 36 minutes of explosive action, Moorer was crowned the new IBF & WBA Heavyweight Champion via MD12 with judges Chuck Giampa, Jerry Roth & Dalby Shirley scoring the bout 116-112, 115-114 & 114-114 respectively.

However, Jerry Roth made the error of scoring round 2 a 10-10 when it should have been 10-9 due to the knockdown by Holyfield who was otherwise dominated in the round. Had Roth scored the round correctly, his final tally would have been 114-114 i.e Holyfield would have retained both titles via majority draw.

Shelly Finkell (Holyfield’s manager) filed a protest to the NSAC to no avail (as in most cases).

After the fight, Holyfield was hospitalized due to severe dehydration and injury on his left rotator cuff and later on, it was discovered that he had a bruised kidney. Additionally, he was also diagnosed with left ventricular noncompaction which resulted in a short-lived retirement as he later claimed he had been cured by evangelist Benny Hinn.

A few months after, he was given a clean bill of health by doctors at the Mayo Clinic where he was informed that his heart condition was caused by excessive medications and re-hydration received during his hospitalization.

Both fighters went on to face each other in a rematch a little more than 3.5 years after their sensational first encounter with the IBF & WBA Heavyweight Titles on the line once again.
