Yes it's Stingray! So stand by for action, Marineville! Anything can happen in the next half hour.
After all the suspense of each episode, the song Aqua Marina (written by Barry Gray and performed by Gary Miller and the Barry Gray Orchestra) provided a soothing undersea outro accompaniment to the closing credits of the utterly brilliant 1964 British television series Stingray produced by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson.
Marina was the silent puppet in Stingray, albeit that she did speak in one audio episode released on vinyl. The reason for her silence was not so much to give her an additional mysterious allure, but more that Sylvia Anderson wanted to take a bit of a rest from recording character voices.
Whilst the Stingray puppets weren't precisely modelled on famous people there was no mistaking Marina's likeness to Ursula Andress and Brigitte Bardot, whilst Troy Tempest was a dead ringer for James Garner and Atlanta Shore was a Lois Maxwell lookalike. Titan was apparently loosely based on Laurence Olivier, but I doubt that Larry would have been too flattered!
Stingray, produced by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, was funded by Lew Grade's ATV television company and distributed worldwide by ITC. It was a great export success. Although known in most international markets as Stingray, Brazil was a notable exception where the show was called Contrato de Risco (Risk Contract).
Stingray was the first major British TV series produced in colour.
The Stingray outro is my favourite of all the wonderful Supermarionation theme tunes.
