Cycling with shorter cranks has some great advantages if you have stiff, painful hips as it will open up your hip angle, but you might be surprised to learn whether more effort is required to turn the pedals or less. I've compared the effect on my heart rate of riding with either 175mm cranks or 160mm cranks, when the power output is the same, over a 30 minute duration indoor ride. This is the third video in a series looking at why cyclists should ride with shorter cranks.
