Wheatley Tunnel opened in 1890 and, though initially goods transport only, later carried passengers between Pellon and Holmfield, crossing the impressive Wheatley Viaduct. At one point the tunnel also connected to a part of the well known Queensbury Tunnel.

Unfortunately, the stretch of railway was closed to passengers in the 1920s and goods ceased to move through the tunnel by 1960. Disused for 60 years, the structure is a half mile long wonder of Victorian architecture. it's hard to believe it would have been built brick by brick.
