The Image: The tableau I think it's called of the three women - and how Fassbinder so masterfully arranges them. Most extraordinary I think is how Irm Hermann (Marlene) stands totally silently at the back by the door (blurred - a ghost almost) - listening/watching/regarding while this almost Chekhovian scene plays out in the foreground between mother and daughter whispering together about 'the love/the hurt' (as Tina Turner says! Tina Turner - On Silent Wings (Offici...) and of course those immortal words - the mantra we must all one day accept or discover for ourselves: To love without demands...

The lighting, the blocking - how did Fassbinder get that so entirely right? (even the red of Petra's flower glowing slightly in the gloom of the dark bedroom.
This is a sacred scene.  A monument of world cinema...
