Are your year five and six children currently learning about the Anglo-Saxons or the Vikings? Do your children have a particular interest in history or in British monarchs? If so the Alfred the great powerpoint is a really good way to support your children's learning.
Your children can access this resource using a laptop or if your children cannot access their own laptop the powerpoint can be easily printed out to be used as a tabletop resource. The powerpoint covers a brief description of who the Anglo-Saxons were the early life of Alfred the great and his successes and failures as a British monarch. During this video i'll outline four different ways you can use this resource to support your child's learning. The first activity your child can complete is to create a glossary. As your child works their way through the powerpoint it might be useful for your child to create their own glossary of topic-related vocabulary to use as a reference in later lessons or during the other activities outlined in this video. Once your child understands the topic-related vocabulary using Twinkl's timeline templates which can be chosen based on your child's ability. Your child can use the slides to add key dates from Alfred the great's life. Your child will need to use their knowledge of three-digit numbers and chronology to complete this task. Another activity they could complete is creating a diary entry from the perspective of Alfred the great using lime paper or Twinkl's diary writing frames. Your child can use the events mentioned in the powerpoint such as Alfred's rise to power or his relationship with the Vikings to create a diary entry, this gives them the opportunity to think about the events in Alfred's life and to reflect on what life was like during Anglo-Saxon times. The final activity your children can complete using the powerpoint is a fact file about Alfred the great, again using lime paper or using Twinkl's differentiated fact file templates children can work their way through the powerpoint filling in their fact files to create their own summary of the life of Alfred the great.
