Many of us have experienced depression at some point in our lives, but have you ever thought of it as an excessive creative process that exhausts our capacity to desire and breaks our libidinal ties with the world? In this talk, Leon describes depression not just a pathology, but rather as a unique creative process that aims to transform an unobtainable unknown object into a lost object.

Drawing on the theories of Freud and Lacan, Leon offers a metapsychological framework that explicates a type of excessive melancholic sublimation. Through this framework, we can understand the psychoanalytic treatment of melancholia as the construction of an imaginary "limit" to the hold of the impossible idealized object. In other words, we can help patients move beyond the debilitating effects of depression by helping them to create an imaginary boundary between themselves and their unattainable desires.

So join Unconscious Berlin in this talk between Leon and Mert as we explore the complexities of depression, mourning, and creativity, and learn how we can use psychoanalytic theory to better understand and treat this unique form of human experience. Please subscribe and leave you comments. Thank you.

The talk was part of an event held at the Ethos Psikolojik Danışmanlık in Istanbul.
