In this DIY Auto Repair video, young mechanic Aiman will show you how to Refill coolant on Toyota Prius Gen II I4 1.5L Hybrid Synergy Drive.  Second generation Prius covers model year 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 & 2009.

This video is when using manual method by pouring the coolant manually into the radiator as opposed to using an AIRLIFT system.  We have a separate video on how to use AIRLIFT tool, here's the link:

If you're interested in finding out how to drain the coolant, here's our video on how to do that:  Toyota Prius Engine Coolant Change | ... (Toyota Prius Engine Coolant Change | P1: DIY How To Drain 2004-09 Gen 2 II Hybrid | ICE Not Inverter).

Re-filling the coolant is only the initial stage of a complicated process for Prius coolant change.  This is a step after drain or flush and before bleeding.  Bleeding, burping or getting rid of the air bubbles in the radiator, hoses, heater core and the Coolant Heat Recovery Storage canister (CHRS) is critical and has to be done after filling.

"Burping" the cooling system in your Toyota refers to bleeding the cooling system and is necessary if air has entered the system. Air in the cooling system causes hot spots and subsequently overheating and serious engine damage. To prevent serious engine damage, you must bleed the cooling system of air.

It is not too complicated and we have separate videos on how to do that below:

1)  Removing air bubbles from CHRS:
2)  Bleeding / burping air bubbles from the Heater Core:

The Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) cooling system is separate and independent of the hybrid inverter cooling system, and if you want to know how to bleed the inverter coolant, check out our video here:  How To Bleed INVERTER Coolant System ...

The ICE cooling system uses the same type of coolant as the inverter cooling system.  Gen 2 was factory filled with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (SLLC).  SLLC pink is premixed, eliminating the hassle of mixing and the potential for error.  Toyota Super LongLife Coolant (pink) is just regular ethylene glycol silicate-free premixed Phosphate-based Hybrid Organic Acid Technology (HOAT / OAT).  It is Silicate, Amine & Borate free.  This genuine OEM manufacturer recommended coolant from Toyota dealership is rather expensive.  Alternatives such as Zerex Asian, Pentosin Pentofrost A4 or other HOAT/OAT red/pink Super Extended Life coolant from Valvoline, Peak, Prestone etc., available at your local auto parts stores such as Advanced Auto Parts, AutoZone, O'Reilly, NAPA, PepBoys and even at Walmart -- can also be considered if you want to save money, but please do your own research and due diligence.

A coolant flush is more complex, and usually a bit more expensive if you were to get it done at local repair shop or garages, and for Prius, they usually aren't necessary — a regular drain-and-fill will work fine.
