UKRAINE WAR: Putin threat against NATO? "This could be a possible response from the Russians!" German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) believes that a possible permission from NATO partners for Ukraine to use long-range weapons against targets in Russia is covered by international law. On Friday, he also rejected Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin's threat that such a deployment would put NATO at war with Russia. The issue of long-range weapons was also to be discussed on Friday at a meeting between US President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Washington. The USA and Great Britain are free to "decide" on such a deployment on Russian territory with regard to the weapons they supply, Pistorius said on Friday in Berlin. This is their business. "International law allows this." Referring to warnings from Russian President Vladimir Putin that NATO would then be at war with his country, Pistorius said: "Putin's threats are Putin's threats. There is no need to say more. He threatens whenever he likes and entices whenever he thinks it is right." Pistorius made the comments during a visit by Lithuanian Defense Minister Laurynas Kasciunas. Kasciunas said that Putin and Russia "always try to create the myth" that they would react very harshly. Although his country does not have long-range weapons, Lithuania has decided to provide resources to the Ukrainian defense industry so that it can produce long-range weapons itself. Lithuania will "help Ukraine produce them," Kasciunas continued. "So this is also an option for other countries." Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, meanwhile, commented on Putin's warning and said it was unequivocal: "We have no doubt that this statement has reached its recipients." Meanwhile, government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit in Berlin said with regard to Germany that the current discussion revolves around "weapons that we have not even delivered". The weapons in question are "qualitatively different" to those delivered by Germany to Ukraine - and exceed them in terms of their range. In this respect, no changes are necessary, stressed Hebestreit. Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Starmer traveled to Washington for consultations with US President Biden about the war in Ukraine and the Middle East. In response to Putin's threat, Starmer told journalists: "Russia started this conflict. Russia illegally invaded Ukraine. Russia can end this conflict immediately." British media reported that Biden, who fears a nuclear conflict, is willing to allow Ukraine to use British and French missiles with US technology - but not missiles manufactured by the US itself. Starmer is scheduled to meet Biden in the Oval Office at 4:30 p.m. (local time, 6:00 p.m. CEST). Planned meetings with Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris or her Republican rival Donald Trump are not currently on Starmer's agenda. The main focus of the talks between Starmer and Biden is expected to be on Ukraine. After more than two and a half years of war, fears are growing about Ukraine's losses on the battlefield. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken assured Ukraine on Tuesday during a visit to Kyiv with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy that Washington would quickly review Ukraine's demand for the use of long-range Western weapons in Russia. Currently, Washington only allows Kyiv to attack Russian targets in the occupied parts of Ukraine and in some Russian border regions that are directly related to Moscow's fighting. #ukraine #russia #putin #worldnewschannel Subscribe to the WELT YouTube Channel WELT DOKU Channel WELT Podcast Channel WELT Network Reporter Channel The WELT news livestream http://bit.ly/2fwuMPg The top news on WELT.de http://bit.ly/2rQQD9Q The media library on WELT.de http://bit.ly/2Iydxv8 WELT news channel on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/welt.nachrichtensender/ WORLD on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/welt/ On a personal note: Due to the high volume of irrelevant and offensive posts, we are currently unable to accept any more comments.
