"Classical Gas" is an instrumental musical piece composed ,and originally performed by American guitarist Mason Williams with instrumental backing by members of the Wrecking Crew

The song premiered in 1968 on an episode of Smoother Brothers' Show which made it one of first music videos ever made.

After recording the episode the host of the show, famously commented on the piece saying 'That's the most over-arranged piece of s--t I've ever heard.' to which he was told to leave. He was allowed back to the studio next day after admitting  "I was wrong, the record is great".

Classical Gas won Grammy awards in 1969 for Best Instrumental Composition, Best Contemporary Pop Performance, Instrumental, and Best Instrumental Arrangement.

The song  is sometimes erroneously thought to have been performed, or even composed, by Eric Clapton, since Clapton was the musical director of, and played much of the guitar music for, the feature film The Story of Us in which Williams' recording appeared.
