This is a hair product guide for anyone just starting out on their hair journey. I get asked lots of questions about what products should be used, how they should be used and in which order, so I thought I'd help by doing a video to help simplify things in order to help those of you who are overwhelmed with all the information out there.

So here are the products you need in your hair product kit;

SHAMPOOS

Moisturising shampoos are the best ones to use. They will inject moisture into the hair making it soft, supple, manageable and will provide lots of slip, making detangling easier.

There are 'Sulfate shampoos' and there are 'Sulfate free shampoos'. Sulfate shampoos will strip the hair of it's natural oils, so using a Sulfate free shampoo is a good option. If you do decide to use a Sulfate shampoo, you can Pre-poo your hair (applying oils prior to washing) to prevent it from completely stripping the hair.

Co-washing (using a conditioner to wash your hair rather than a shampoo) is also another method you can use to prevent your hair being stripped as well.

Clarifying Shampoos are great for helping to remove deep down product build up within the hair that may not be removed with a normal shampoo product. It should only be used once a month.

CONDITIONERS

Moisturising conditioners are designed to inject moisture into the hair making it soft, supple and more managable.

Protein conditioners are designed to strengthen and rebuild the hair, after ongoing chemical services such as; relaxers, texturisers, hair dyes/beaches.

For those that use chemicals on their hair, should always do a protein treatment to help rebuild and strengthen the hair, otherwise the hair will become weak and prone to breakage. Also, make sure you alternate between moisture and protein treatments, to help give the elasticity in the hair balance.

If you have natural hair, it's not necessary to carryout protein treatments, unless of course you apply hair dyes/bleaches or you use a lot of heat.

One another thing to add.....

There are 2 types of conditioners; Deep conditioners and Instant conditioners. Deep conditioners are the best ones to use and should be left on the hair for 15-20 (with or without heat). An instant conditioner will tell you to leave the product on for about 2-5 mins and will only coat the hair. Avoid using these ones and opt of a deep conditioning product.

LEAVE IN CONDITIONERS

Leave in conditioners are designed to provide an aftercare service to the hair and can be used straight after washing conditioning your hair or you can use it on a daily basis. There are also Moisturising and Protein based Conditioners.

MOISTURISERS

Our hair is naturally dry, so we need to ensure that we apply regular moisture, to prevent it from drying out, leading to breakage. Many moisturisers contain 'Alcohols' and there are good and bad ones. The good Alcohols are known as; Long Chain/fatty Alcohols which help to hydrate the hair and the bad ones are known as; Short Chain Alcohols, which dry out the hair.

Here is a list of the Long Chain Alcohols/Fatty Alcohols (Good):

Cetyl Alcohol
Stearyl Alcohol
Myristyl Alcohol
Lauryl Alcohol
Behenyl Alcohol
Cetearyl Alcohol

Here is a list of the Short Chain Alcohols (Bad):

SD Alcohol 40
Ethanol
SD Alcohol
Propyl
Porpanol
Isopropyl

The easiest way I remember the difference between the 2 is by saying; 'Long Chain -- Keeps your hair Long and Short Chain -- Keeps your hair short.

OILS

There are so many different oils out there to use and some are known as; Carrier Oils and some are known as; Essential Oils.

Carrier oils are known to absorb moisture into the hair and if you moisturise your hair and then seal with a carrier oil, it will help to lock in moisture. Also when you mix a Carrier oil with an Essential Oil, it helps to carry the Essential oils into the hair.

Essential oils are very concentrated and should be diluted prior to use. Therefore, it's best to mix these oils with Carrier oils before applying to your hair. Never apply an Essential oils directly to your hair or scalp, as it will cause damage.

Here is a list of some of the Carrier oils I mentioned:

Almond Oil
Avocado Oil
Grape Seed Oil
Coconut Oil
Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Here is a list of some of the Essential oils I mentioned:

Peppermint Oil
Rosemary Oil
Tea Tree Oil
Lavender Oil
Chamomile Oil
