STORYLINE

The presidents of the once waring nations of Iran and Iraq demonstrated an outward showing of unity when they met in Tehran on Monday.

The visit to Iran by Iraqi President Jalal Talabani is the first time in more than 40 years that an Iranian president has received an Iraqi president in the Iranian capital.

Both leaders used the opportunity to dismiss claims by the United States and Britain that Iran is meddling in the internal affairs of Iraq.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said: "It's interesting that those who moved hundreds of  thousands of military forces to Iraq and are using force against the Iraqi people accuse Iran of meddling in Iraq's domestic affairs."

Both presidents also pledged to work towards improved relations.

"To extend as much as possible all kind of ties, diplomatic, economic, political, trade, gas, petrol or oil level. We will try to have our relations (being) strengthened and extended," Iraqi President Jalal Talabani said at a news conference at the presidential palace.

During his visit, Talabani paid tribute to the late Iranian revolutionary leader Ayatollah Khomeini.

The Iraqi president will also meet Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Tuesday.

The Iran-Iraq war began in 1980 with the Iraqi land and air invasion of western Iran, and fighting continued for most of the 1980s.
