Brain breaks serve many purposes, all of which build student engagement! Whether your brain break is intended to help students make a smooth class transition, boost their energy, or sharpen their focus, it is important for you to choose the right kind for the task. Physical brain breaks get students up and moving, and help students wake up and feel energized. Semi-stationary brain breaks serve some of the same functions, but can be more appropriate for students with limited mobility, or those who are still learning your classroom procedures and benefit from more structure. Stationary brain breaks help students regain focus as they settle into the next activity, while seated at their desks. Regardless of the brain break you choose, all students benefit from them, and you will see the results in their classwork, engagement, and behavior. Plan your brain breaks intentionally, teach your students the procedures for them, and make them a true part of your lesson rather than a reward. By choosing and implementing your brain breaks with care, you can help your students focus and achieve their best potential.

1) How can I tell when my students need a brain break?
2) How much time should I devote to a brain break, considering my students’ ages and needs?
3) How can I clearly begin and end my brain breaks for my students to make our transitions as smooth and quick as possible?
