Off-Grid Log Cabin Build in
Off-Grid Log Cabin Build in Alaska. This couple finished the exterior of their cabin working only weekends in just 5 months. They didn’t have any previous building experience, so studied books, videos and taught themselves as they went along.
They bought a plot of land in Alaska which was just the right price for them, and started clearing land and cutting trees almost immediately, with snow still on the ground. They dug eight holes to house 8 large concrete pillars for the foundation.
They cut and hand peeled over 70 logs which was a very long process. They used really simple tools, just a hand-made scribe, a saw, a chisel and chainsaw to make all the notches in the logs, and used a saddle-notch to join the logs and create a really tight fit.
For the roof, them built the frame in four different parts and then put it into place on the two gable walls, put plywood on top of the frames and finished the roof with steel sheets.
A lot of attention was paid to the detail on the interior too, building pieces of furniture such as the large table and chairs, adding antlers to the interior and exterior and creating a staircase based around one single log. The fireplace in the off-grid log cabin was surrounded by rocks that they found from the river. They also hand crafted all the kitchen cabinets, and built a small outhouse with a composting toilet.
